Grace Dinn, one of our Senior Therapeutic Care Givers, recently underwent training with Cornell University to become a TCI Trainer. Grace passed with flying colours and is now our newest TCI Trainer, alongside Registered Manager (Booth House), Joseph Black and Deputy Manager (Pennine View), Jackie Flynn.
What is TCI Training?
TCI or Therapeutic Crisis Intervention helps residential child care organizations to:
- Create a trauma-sensitive environment where children and adults are safe and feel safe
- Pro-actively prevent and/or de-escalate potential crisis situations with children
- Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff
- Process the crisis event with children to help improve their coping strategies
- Effectively deliver in-house TCI training
TCI training and regular refresher sessions are provided to all of our staff throughout our three homes in East Lancashire.
Grace’s First TCI Training Session
Last week, Grace Dinn, presented her first training session. Here’s what she had to say about it:
“I felt like using the slides as conversation starters around TCI and involving the trainees was a strong point. The feedback we got from them was that they liked that, rather than just reading off the many slides there is to TCI.
I also felt that it worked well that I and Joe (Joseph Black) decided between ourselves beforehand which were our individual stronger points in TCI and shared the training roles between each other.
Also, using examples of our own experience of putting TCI into practice with the children we care for seemed to help the trainees get a better understanding of how to do it themselves.
Something I would maybe do differently next time is getting the staff to practice Life Space Interviews – LSIs a little more and also have more confidence beforehand as I doubted myself slightly before I delivered the training when in reality there was nothing to worry about and it was all very positive and I felt like the staff learnt from us.”
We are extremely proud of Grace for successfully completing her TCI trainer training and delivering her first session.
